Marika and others
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name if Peter Freshwater. I am
the former (now retired) Deputy Librarian of Edinburgh University
Library. I have a general interest in the history of the Commonwealth
of Nations and its peoples, stemming from a father who was born in
North-eastern Rhodesia (as it then was) to missionary grandparents, and
fostered by studying under George Shepperson at the University of
Edinburgh. I am a former Chair of SCOLMA and of the Library and
Resources Group of the British Association for Canadian Studies, and am
still a member of Council of the latter.
Before I retired from EUL I was responsible overall for the area studies
collections in the Library, and supplied information on the EUL
collections to several RSLP and other projects, lastly CASBAH, during
which Carol and I corresponded several times. Among my current
interests is researching the history of early students from the Empire
(now the Commonwealth) who studied at the University of Edinburgh during
the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.
I am most grateful to Carol for sharing with me, and with the list, her
suggestions of recent publications on the history of black communities
in the UK. I am looking forward to following up the publications that
she lists, especially in the libraries available to me. Out of print
books are frequently the best sources to date on their subjects. but go
and stay out of print because of their specialist interest. Sometimes
they come back into print when general interest revives. This is the
nature of the book trade
I have always regarded discussion lists, of which I subscribe to
several, as being for seeking and sharing information on topics of
common interest. I am sorry if I have misunderstood the purpose of this
list, however, but am still grateful for the opportunity that it
provides for airing and sharing views and information.
With best wishes,
Peter Freshwater
