Subject: Dancing at the Crossroads
Please find below detail of a conference on African Diasporic Dance in

Dancing at the Crossroads
African Diasporic Dances in Britain: A Two Day Conference at
The Royal Festival Hall, South Bank, London
Thursday, August 1st and
Friday, August 2nd
In conjunction with the Artistic Residency of the Jiving Lindy Hoppers
at The Royal Festival Hall for the Week of 29 July, 2002
Over the years various conferences and meetings have discussed the
plight of dance practitioners of African and African descent and their
dances and other dance traditions they started off in the context of
this country, but the crisis for these artists and dance forms
continues. With the advent of new faces and works in this area of the
dance world, it is time to look back at our genesis; to consider new
directions that will enable dance practitioners to be truly recognised
for their artistic skills and creativity; and to create a forum for
academic and critical discourses in which the dance forms of Africa and
the Diaspora are taken seriously and respected for their rich inherent
value, characteristics and aesthetic worth. The 'Dancing at the
Crossroads' conference seeks to contribute to this re-evaluation by
provoking and encouraging fresh ideas and new approaches.
