Dear list members,
Further to my original posting about English Heritage blue plaques (see
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind0206&L=basa&F=&S=&P=1367) I'd
like to thank John, Roiyah, Lloyd and Harry for contributing the additional
6 suggestions (summarised below).
(1) William Afflick (c.1781 - 1855) - St. Kitts-born member of the 10th
Hussars and "one of the 10th's most decorated enlisted veterans of the
Napoleonic Wars"
- Key UK residence: 45 Gore (or Park) Lane, Kensington. Source: 1851 Census:
30 March 1851. HO 107/1468/12. - researched by John Ellis, with further
information available in the forthcoming article: JD Ellis. "A
Revolutionary Activist in His Own Cause; William Afflick of the 10th
Hussars. In Westminster History Review. No.5. 2002.
(2) Mary Prince (c.1788- 183?)- Bermudan-born woman who was born into
slavery and whose autobiography was written up as the influential slave
narrative 'History of Mary Prince: A West Indian Slave', published by the
Anti Slavery Society in 1831.
(3) George Padmore - aka Malcolm Ivan Meridith Nurse - ( 1902? - 1959) -
Writer and political activist involved in anti-colonial, independence
struggles. Padmore came to Britain and a key figure in the organisation of
the 5th Pan African Congress that was held in Manchester in 1945. Padmore
also worked as an adviser to Kwame Nkrumah in the years leading upto, and
after, the independence of Ghana in 1957.
(4) Kwame Nkrumah (1909-1972) - First president of the republic of Ghana
(5) Cyril Lionel Robert (CLR) James (1901-1989) - Writer and political
activist, involved in the Pan African Movement. Author of 'Beyond a
Boundary', etc.
(6) David Pitt (Lord Pitt of Hampstead) (1913-1994) - Grenadan-born GP and
equalities campaigner who became the first black chairman of the Greater
London Council.
In order for BASA to compile accurate details about all the proposed
nominations, please let me know (via this list, [log in to unmask]) if the
dates of birth/death given above for suggestions 2-6 are accurate and (if
possible) let me know some of the main UK residences of the people
nominated. For example, I am aware that CLR lived in Nelson (Lancashire)
during the 1930s and died in Brixton, London, in 1989, but don't have
immediate access to more detailed addresses.
People who have already carried out substantial research into some/all of
the above lives - and the lives of other black and Asian peoples who should
be commemorated with blue plaques - should feel free to share your research
knowledge with the rest of the list members and help BASA to compile a
detailed set of nominations for English Heritage as soon as possible.
I'd also like to encourage other people to join in this discussion (esp. to
suggest more black and Asian women as key figures) so that the list we
eventually submit is a full and balanced one!
Looking forward to hearing more views and nominations...
Carol
