Alderman, 1925-1970. The seminar presentations - given by Jonathan Wood
(Lecturer, Plymouth University & Labour Heritage), Councillor Claude Miller
(William's son), Lucy MacKeith (Black & Asian Studies Association and Sean
Creighton (Secretary, Labour Heritage) - will be held at Virginia House
Settlement, 40 Looe St, Bretonside, Plymouth, PL4 OEB, on Thursday 4 July
2002, 7-9.30pm. All welcome.
About William Miller:
· Born Stonehouse; grandson of freed
black slave
· 1914 started work at Royal Naval
Dockyard, Devonport
· 1925 elected Labour Councillor
· 1927 became Alderman
· Organised wartime evacuation and ARP
Warden
· Chairman of Housing Committee
1945-50, spearheading post-war housing reconstruction, and 1953-59
· 1958 Chair of Association of
Municipal Corporations Housing Committee
· 1962 Deputy Lord Mayor
· 1963 Chairman of Parks and
Recreation
· 1970 retired from Council
· Plymouth's Miller Way is named after
him
