Several years ago in Tanzania I was shown for sale at very little cost a
xeroxed copy of what was said to be the last certificate of manumission
issued by the German colonial government in German East Africa. The
implication was that no more slaves needed to be manumitted or required
proof of manumission. So in its way, it marks the end of the slave trade in
East Africa insofar as the German government was concerned. As little
documentation for the East African slave trade exists, I thought that some
might find it useful in the classroom or in other applications. As the
document is quite old and the product of a defunct colonial (and imperial)
regime, I do not see any copyright issues involved in its distribution.
Anyone interested in a gratis jpg. copy of the document can e-mail me
directly at [log in to unmask] This is the only form in which I can provide
it.
