Wolverhampton's Black and Ethic Minority Experience project (BE-ME) will
take the stand at an important national conference being held at the British
Library in London on Monday 7 October.
The conference, called Hidden Treasures, has been organised by the British
Film Institute, the British Library National Sound Archive, the British
Universities Film & Video Council, the Film Archive Forum, the Heritage
Lottery Fund, the National Council on Archives and Resource.
The day-long event will consider the importance of moving images and sound
to our heritage and present-day culture.
Representatives of BE-ME will talk about the unique collection of video
interviews of members of Wolverhampton's Black and Asian communities that
forms the basis of an extensive collection preserved in Wolverhampton City
Archives. They will also tell London audience of the educational work being
carried out with local schools, colleges, universities and communities.
The conference will be chaired by Gillian Reynolds, well known broadcaster
and radio critic of the Daily Telegraph. Professor Sir Christopher Frayling,
Rector of the Royal College of Art is the keynote speaker. Other speakers
include Joan Bakewell, Trevor Phillips and Liz Forgan.
Representing BE- ME will be Delva Campbell who chairs the Wolverhampton
project and Frank Challenger, Chief Executive of Light House, one member in
a consortium of over twenty organisations that make up BE-ME, and host to
BE-ME Digitise that is creating interactive learning resources for the
internet.
Delva Campbell says, 'This is a great opportunity to showcase some of the
exciting work going on here in Wolverhampton. The BE-ME project is
preserving the memories and experience of some of the people who settled
here in the fifties and sixties and passing on knowledge about their
contribution to development of the City to future generations.'
People in Wolverhampton will be able to find out more about BE-ME at a free
update event to be held at Light House on 22 October, starting at 6.30, as
part of the City's Black History Month celebrations.
