Marika and list,
Thank you for crediting Helen Gray and your BASA Newsletter publication. I
would guess that was the first widely disseminated piece on George
Africanus. I hope the new website will be equally widely used. I know the
current one is.
We are very fortunate that there have been several Nottingham people
interested in George Africanus since the 1980s. Various pieces of the jigsaw
of Nottingham evidence have been printed in local publications. The
Nottinghamshire Archives have produced an A4 two sides handout describing
the sources they hold for his life in Nottingham. I know staff there are
also very interested in all aspects of Black and Asian History in
Nottinghamshire. We have worked with them and the Local Studies Library on a
publication and on inset days on the evidence the Archives Libraries and
Museums all hold on these subjects.
We hope to inspire/involve as many people as possible to look for further
evidence on George and his descendants. Recently a description was found of
a Nottingham History exhibition in Nottingham in 1840 to which Mrs
Africanus loaned some material for display. I'm sure there will be many more
such pieces of information to uncover.
Last year a video was done on George Africanus's life by Dave Stickman
Higgins and funded by the ACFF in Nottingham. They also funded a rap CD on
George as well. Some of this material is used by various Nottingham City
Council staff in Saturday Schools and mentoring situations as well.
It is a great privilege to be involved in the sort of research which not
only involves so many people but also builds up such a useful corpus of
information to be used in so many ways.
I hope the work of Len Garrison and others in the various London
repositories turns up further information on George Africanus' Turnbull
descendants.
Any help you can give us will be shared and used as broadly as possible.
With all good wishes,
Suella Postles

We published an article by Helen Gray, who I believe was the first Notts
archivist to research George Africanus, in the BASA Newsletter, issue #19,
1997.
