2nd Open Archives Workshop: Open Access to Hidden Resources
6-7 December 2002, Lisbon.
http://www.oaforum.org/workshops/lisb_invitation.php
We would like to fill the few remaining places at this workshop with
representatives of proper archival organisations, as the registration
list so far is biased toward the other target audience, that is
libraries. George Mackenzie (The National Archives of Scotland) and
Goran Krisstiansson (The Regional Archives in Lund) will be presenting
their expert report on the relevance of the "open archives" approach
for archival organisations, so the event is sure to provide
opportunities to contribute to this debate and meet others from across
Europe with an interest in this area.
Time is set aside for small-group breakout sessions and also for
informal communication in a social setting. An optional tutorial on
the
afternoon before the workshop that will provide a beginners
introduction to the Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata
Harvesting (OAI-PMH). The Workshop itself will evaluate whether, and
how, OAI-PMH, which was initially proposed to solve the problems of
interoperability among e-print repositories, is relevant to genuine
archives and to libraries. Requirements, standards, best practices,
and solutions of the traditional archival and library communities to
interoperability problems will be analysed and compared with the
features provided by the OAI-PMH. The challenges to be addressed in
constructing harvesting and search services for library and archival
material will also be highlighted. For more information and
registration, see http://www.oaforum.org/workshops/lisb_invitation.php
