Revision of the Study of the Records Lifecycle
Many of those working within the higher education sector will be
familar with the Study of the Records Lifecycle published by the JISC
in 1999.
The aim of the Study was to provide professional guidance on good
practice for the management of records and archives in HE institutions
(HEIs) and to provide models to assist institutions in developing their
own systems and procedures. It contained:
* an HEI Function and activity model
* an HEI Records Retention Schedule
* HEI Archival Selection Criteria
* an Outline Scheme for Presentation of HEI Archival Records
The original study can be found at http://www.jisc.ac.uk/pub01/records_lifecycle/
The Study was welcomed by those involved in records management in the
sector and it has been widely used as a general point of reference and
as a basis for the development of policies and procedures within
individual institutions.
Four years on, JISC has commissioned Elizabeth Parker (now at Emmerson
Consulting) again to produce new editions of the HEI Function &
Activity Model and the HEI Retention Schedule. Apart from the obvious
need to update them to incorporate changes in, and affecting, the
sector since 1998, we want to provide the best possible tools to assist
institutions in preparing for the forthcoming implementation of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Over the next three months, Elizabeth will be consulting widely within
the HE sector, approaching records managers, archivists,
administrators, data protection officers and others for their views on
the current Model and Schedule and to capture ideas for their
development and improvement. We expect to publish the new editions of
the Model and Schedule in April 2003.
