I've just seen the Norfolk job advert for an archivist to start on scale 4,
which as we know is a scale below the minimum for advertising in ARC
Recruitment and two scales below the Society of Archivists recommended minimum
salary. Obviously allowing offices paying below the acceptable minimum to
advertise directly to the membership through archives-nra makes a nonsense of
having a mimimum salary in the first place.
From memory when this anomaly came up a while ago the listowners said that
there was no kind of policy framework which would allow them to remove or ban
such postings and myself and other made various suggestions including that the
Society could write formally and request that archives-nra did not carry such
adverts or that the acceptable use policy could include a clause covering this
(in the way spam is not allowed)
It was also pointed out in the debate we had last time that the existence of
this facility could put SoA members in a difficult position if asked to
advertise low paid jobs in this way as it is currently very much up to the
individual to say yes or no. Has anything further been done to close this rather
large loophole?
