PUBLIC RECORD OFFICE
18 months fixed term contract
The Public Record Office (PRO) is the National Archive for England, Wales
and the United Kingdom. Its holdings cover over 1000 years of history –
from the Domesday Book to the latest Government papers to be released to
the public. The PRO is at the forefront of the drive to make the nation’s
memory and culture available to the widest possible audience. At Kew it
receives about 100,000 visits and 130,000 remote enquiries a year. Our
future developments include enhancing our catalogues, developing our e-
commerce activities and providing on-line access to images of our
documents.
The PRO’s online catalogue, PROCAT was launched 18 months ago. It provides
users both at Kew and over the World Wide Web with a powerful way of
searching for records. The project Labouring Men, Labouring Women is a
Heritage Lottery funded initiative to incorporate descriptions onto the
PRO’s on-line catalogue (PROCAT), of files on labour, social, economic and
employment history. The project will enrich and make more accessible
records of national, regional and local significance on labour and
employment issues, including industrial and arbitration disputes and
relations, working conditions, pay, employment policy and women’s
employment.
We are seeking a motivated individual to input and enhance these
descriptions currently held in paper based systems.
The successful candidate will have
· Data input/word processing/keyboarding skills
· Team working and interpersonal skills
· Initiative and a willingness to learn new skills as required
· Analytical skills
