University of Wales Aberystwyth
Department of Information & Library Studies
The Department
The University of Wales Aberystwyth is the oldest of the constituent
colleges of the University of Wales. The Department of Information and
Library Studies was established in 1989 as a result of a Transbinary Group
Study recommendation that the College of Librarianship Wales (founded in
1964) and the University College of Wales Aberystwyth should merge. The
merger of the two institutions was regarded as a natural and progressive
step in the development of information and library studies in Aberystwyth.
The merger has been a huge success and the department has seen steady
growth in its range of activities and significant expansion in its
recruitment of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Currently the department has 15 academic staff (10 full-time and 5
part-time) - one professor, one reader and three senior lecturers with the
remaining academic staff on lecturer grade. However, following several
early retirements during the past twelve months the institution's Planning
Group announced that three new appointments to the academic staff will be
made over the next twelve months. In addition we have a team of 4 Learning
Development Officers and an Educational Technology Officer in the Open
Learning Unit, 10 contracted research assistants, a Departmental
Administrator, a Computer Officer, Printing Officer and 5 secretarial/
clerical staff.
The Department is located in purpose built building on the University's
very attractive and well-resourced Llanbadarn campus which is shared with
the Institute of Rural Studies and various central University services. The
campus library, the Thomas Parry library, is generally acknowledged to hold
the finest collection of materials relating to information and library
studies in the UK, which together with the Information Services on the main
campus and the facilities of a major copyright research library, the
National Library of Wales, immediately adjacent to the main campus, offer
unrivalled resources for research.
Ultimate responsibility in providing leadership for the Department's
research and teaching activities rests with the Head of Department, but
this responsibility is shared with senior members of staff including
Professor David Ellis (Director of Research), Ray Lonsdale (Director of
Research Studies) and Dr Judy Broady Preston (Director of Teaching) who
chair the department's Research Strategy Committee, the Research Studies
Committee and the Learning and Teaching Committee respectively.
Research
The Department has been, or is currently being funded by a number of bodies
including the Arts and Humanities Board, Joint Information Systems
Committee, European Union, British Library Research and Innovation Centre,
RE:SOURCE, Leverhulme Trust, Arts Council England, NHS Information
Authority, Welsh National Assembly, Library & Information Services Council
(Wales), Arts Council Wales and the National Library of Wales. During the
past five years these research programmes have produced more than £2
million in research income for the department and currently we employ 10
full-time and part-time contracted research staff.
The research policy and strategy is intended to maintain and develop the
Department's reputation as a leading research department in the LIS field,
through the enhancement of existing research strengths and the adoption of
an approach to research management that is adapted to the needs and
opportunities of the LIS research environment.
The Department's research activities are organised around research groups.
The research groups' provide foci for research in the Department, and their
functions include identifying sources of research funding, stimulating the
publication of research results, mentoring staff to be research active and
attracting PhD applications. All members of staff belong to at least one
group. New members of staff, as well as being attached to at least one of
the groups, are assigned a mentor from one research group to help
familiarise them with the research environment of the Department and to
assist with the process of integration into the Department's research
activities.
Research Groups
Following recent restructuring there are now three Research Groups
The Electronic Information Research Group covers electronic information
sources and services, including work with E-journals and E-books and
business information sources and services.
The Knowledge Management Research Group encompasses DILS interests in all
aspects of information and knowledge management, including health
information management and records management.
The Professional Studies Research Group includes all DILS research
activities in relation to education and training, including services to
schools and young people, historical aspects of LIS, archive studies,
collection management and Welsh studies.
Support for Individual Research
In addition to promoting research activity through the research groups the
Department also has an active programme of study leave entitlement and
resources are also available for supporting individual as well as group
research initiatives. Overall, the Department provides an ideal environment
for LIS research, supported by excellent technical, computing and library
resources.
As well as the support provided from within the Department the institution
also offers the following support to individual staff: (1)University
Research Fund for selective support of non-recurrent research initiatives,
which are considered to be of strategic importance to the University's
overall research profile. Particular emphasis is given to supporting
younger members of staff, and projects which could lead to further work
supported by external funding. (2) Learned Societies Fund for the expenses
of members of staff attending research conferences or meetings of Learned
Societies. Priority is given to those with a strong research record, and to
those who are presenting papers. Attendance at prestigious conferences
which will enhance an individual's academic performance may also be
supported if resources allow.
Higher Degree Students
DILS has a long-standing tradition of higher degree student research. One
full-time MPhil student, 11 full-time and 11 part-time PhD students are
currently registered and pursuing research in the fields covered by all
three research foci. Indicative subject areas include, Information
Communications and Multimedia, Use of the Internet in the Humanities, UK
Gateways of Business Information, Use of Electronic Information Sources in
Academic Libraries, Management Information and Charitable Organisations,
Financial Management of Secondary Schools, Impact of IT on Banking and the
Cashless Society, Information Needs of women in Wales.
In addition, two students are currently taking the newly established MSc
Information Systems programme that offers research training as a precursor
to higher degree work.
Learning and Teaching
The department has an international reputation for learning and teaching
innovation, being a pioneer of open and distance learning degree schemes in
information studies in the UK. The design and development of its open
learning programmes is supported by the Open Learning Unit (OLU), with 5
Learning Development Officers. The Department is also one of the core
providers of education in Archives Administration and Records Management
within the UK, with its full-time and distance learning masters degree
schemes being recognised by the Society of Archivists.
Currently DILS has some 400ftes in full-time and distance learning modes of
whom over 60% are taught masters students, thus making the department the
major contributor of postgraduate students ftes at the University of Wales,
Aberystwyth. Almost 66% of all students registered with the Department
study in distance learning mode. Distance Learning is facilitated by
attendance at residential study schools, held either in Aberystwyth or in
Dublin, in April, June, July and September.
Within the University's modular degree scheme structure, an increasing
number of undergraduate and postgraduate modules offered by DILS are
designated as core modules for a variety of degree schemes in other
Departments, such as the School of Management and Business, Computer
Science and Theatre Film and Television Studies. Consequently, new staff
will be required to offer existing and new modules to students registered
on a variety of degree schemes.
The portfolio of degree schemes currently offered by DILS is as follows
