Luna Imaging and Edinburgh University Library would like to
invite you and your colleagues to attend a demonstration of
Insight, the image handling system recently installed in Edinburgh
University Library.
The demonstration will take place in Edinburgh University
Library on the 9th July. There will be two identical sessions that
day, one running from 10 a.m to 12 a.m and one from 2 p.m. to 4

offer some time for hands-on practise with the software for
attendees.
If you would like to attend this demonstration please email

you wish to attend a morning or afternoon session.
This event is sponsored and supported by Sun Microsystems.
Introduction to Insight
Edinburgh University has recently begun using Luna Imaging’s
Insight software for delivering access to two digital image
collections. These initial collections are ‘Charting the Nation’, a
collection of c. 5000 early maps of Scotland, funded through RSLP,
and created in collaboration with the Edinburgh University
Geography Department, drawing on orginals from institutions
throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK; and ‘The Walter Scott
Digital Archive’, an initial collection of digital images of c. 500
paintings, drawings, and engravings produced during the 19th
century to illustrate the works of Walter Scott, and housed in
EUL’s Corson Collection.
Insight is a product that allows us to manage, access and use our
image collections over the Internet. Users are able to search the
database of descriptive metadata, created to international
standards, and using controlled access points, as well as keyword
searching and full Boolean searching. It also allows the user to
make and save selections of images from simple point and click
lists. Insight combines the retrieval and display of text information
with an equally rich set of tools for viewing, comparing, and
organizing images. Very high- quality images are delivered at
impressive speeds across the internet, using MrSid image formats
to make viewing and manipulation of images quick and easy.
The image collections are made available though a web-browser
for standard functionality, but also through a client which has
added functionality, and most importantly for an educational
organisation, a powerful presentation tool, which allows teachers
and students to build, save, and edit sophisticated presentations,
using images derived from a number of collections.
Luna Imaging Inc. makes it easier than ever to build
comprehensive digital image collections by offering state of the art
image management software, Insight®, along with a variety of
ways to quickly and easily build your collections. Collection
managers can digitize their own image collections and incorporate
them into Luna's Insight® software, share content with other
institutions that use Insight, subscribe to digital image collections
through a variety of Luna's content partners, or license
digital images from the growing number of Insight-ready image
collections now available. Insight's powerful cross collection
search engine resolves any differences between metadata
standards so collections can be viewed and searched as one
cohesive body.
Insight is quickly becoming the primary software platform for
accessing high-resolution image collections on the Internet. Now
there are two options for subscribing to large quantities of
quality image content through Insight's high quality software
interface. Cartography Associates will distribute The AMICO
Library® in Insight® beginning Fall of 2002, and the Andrew
W. Mellon Foundation has adopted Luna's Insight software as
the platform to distribute ArtSTOR, a new independent, not-for-
profit organization that will make a large body of digital
resources for the study of art, architecture and other fields in the
humanities available for subscription.
