I am posting this message on behalf of an academic at
Exeter University who is seeking access to feminist letter
collections, particularly relating to the women's peace
movement from the late 1960s onwards. She has investigated
sources in the obvious places, including the Women's
Library, and the feminist archives at Bristol & Leeds, and
is keen to find new leads, whether in public or private
hands.
If you are aware of letter collections which might be
relevant, please email Dr Margaretta Jolly directly on:

Seeking Feminist Letter Writers!
I am researching for a book on letter writing, gender and
sexuality and would be very pleased to hear from anyone who
knows of letters written in the context of second wave
feminism from the late 1960s onwards. I am particularly
interested in personal letters that chart the social
changes in women's (and men's) experiences, lesbian and
bisexual liberation, family relationships, alternative
communities, and different kinds of travel or migration. I
would also be interested in interviewing anyone about
correspondence they wrote or received, whether or not they
would be willing to share the letters with me.
As part of this project, I am writing about correspondences
that were provoked by the women's peace movement from the
late 1960s onwards. Did you write to or from the Greenham
Common Women's Peace Camp, or network with other
campaigners involved in the movement? Did you hang letters
on the fence, write letters of protest or support, write the
newsletter as a letter, write to loved ones from prison?
Again, I would be interested in interviewing anyone with
thoughts on the role of personal letter writing in this
context.
I am a lecturer in the School of English, University of
Exeter, and you can survey the work I have already done on
gender, sexuality, and letter writing, in my book Dear
Laughing Motorbyke: Letters from Women Welders in the
Second World War (1997), or on my CV at:
