The Society for the Study of Labour History and the Modern Records
Centre, University of Warwick Library invite applications for the Edward
Thompson Memorial Bursary for 2002.
The Edward Thompson Memorial Bursary has been established by the
Society for the Study of Labour History in honour of one of its
distinguished founders and past Presidents. It is tenable at the Modern
Records Centre, University of Warwick, Coventry, CV4 7AL, up to the
value of £200 per annum, in order to support research in the MRC
archive.
Eligible applicants are postgraduate research students on a PhD topic
in labour history. We take a broad view of 'labour history' that
includes cultural and social aspects as well as political and
institutional ones. The application should include a brief statement of
the nature of the research topic and some comment on its importance; an
explanation of the value of the MRC archive for the research; and a
statement of need.
Need includes such things as lack of travel and accommodation expense
funds for people using the archive; and lack of funds for photocopying
expenses. Mature and part-time students will be eligible as well as
full-time students. A note on relevant personal circumstances may be
helpful. Applicants should provide contact details of a supporting
referee, such as a PhD supervisor, with whom the bursary committee may
consult.
All applications will be treated in strict confidence. No details of
personal circumstances will go beyond the bursary committee. The only
published details will be the name of the recipient, the topic of
research and the archives to be consulted. In the event of the grant of
more than one bursary in a particular year, the details of the amounts
granted to individuals will be confidential to the bursary committee.
Applications should be marked 'IN CONFIDENCE: SSLH Edward Thompson
Memorial Bursary' and made in duplicate to
