Society speaks with forked tongue (or more accurately, one tongue
doesn't know what the other is saying).
When my current employer, who has no history of employing a professional
archivist, was putting together a bid to the HLF it appraoched the
Society and was told that salaries started in the range of £13,000 and
nary a word was mentioned about recommended scales. The bid was put
together and funding acquired on the basis that the archivist should be
paid £15,000. It came as something as a shock when the advert submitted
to the Newsletter was rejected and resulted in a rejigging of the
project and a large dent in contingency funding.
