Gray's Inn has a large collection of photographs, mainly of its buildings,
which have been accumulated over the years and have little relationship to
each other apart from their subject matter. One of my tasks here is to
catalogue these and apart from the real difficulty in describing visual
images in words I've found myself feeling somwhat adrift, since ISAD(G)
offers little on the subject and although I think MAD III deals with non-
textual records (although I haven't got my copy yet so don't quote me!) I
don't think this helps with photos that aren't part of a textual archive.
I was relieved to see from Rob's e-mail that my attempts to develop my own
cataloguing scheme are pretty much in line with what others are doing, but
I'm convinced I'm reinventing the wheel here and someone, somewhere, must
have already developed a set of rules for this. Does anyone have any
knowledge of the MDA's (Museums Documentation Association's) activities in
this area? The museum world must face this all the time.
Grateful for any guidance.
