Many thanks to all who responded to my query about scanning lantern slides.
The general consensus appears to be that the process should be possible,
either by using a scanner with a transparency adapter, or a lightbox and
digital camera setup. Problems anticipated involve the quality of the
lantern slides, both in terms of the definition of the slide
image(especially in this case given that the original A1 image has been
drastically reduced) and also a warning about dirt between the glass layers.
Several respondents suggested scanning at a particularly high resolution in
order to reproduce the necessary detail when the image is enlarged.
I would be happy to provide further details to anyone who is interested.
