Aidan Jones writes:
Quite apart from any non-Society members, there will always be a
theoretical possibility (however remote) that a candidate might have
acquired potentially useful experience for a particular job by some means
other than the purely conventional ones.
The possibility that job candidates can be suitable for a job without having
been through the conventional "hoops" is not at all remote, especially in the
modern world of reskilling and digital initiatives.
Those of us studying for the SoA Diploma had to be members of the
Society of Archivists and in suitable related employment before being
accepted for the course. However, we are not eligible to begin registration
until after the Diploma is completed. In my case I will have been working as
an archivist for a total of 8 years before I am able to even start registration...
It seems less than remote that I "might have acquired
potentially useful experience for a particular job" before I manage to achieve
registration....
