Is it just me but I thought overall the article was a good one. I agree that
the first two paragraphs are a little over the top but then that's how a
journalist grabs the attention of their reader by making such statements. I
am more concerned that he thinks that these ancient documents, books, old
photographs and drawings are suitable material to be displayed to the
public, presumably on a permanent basis. That aside Mr Turnbill has taken
the time to read the press release, to understand the importance of the
project, to talk about the pitfalls of digitisation and even to have had
some positive quotes in the article.
So yes I second the remarks of Peter Curilecz but lets write to Mr Turnbill
positively suggesting that he might like to build upon his article by seeing
and reporting on the work that Archivists, Conservators and Curators do in
selecting and preserving this material so that it is available when these
large digitisation projects come on board. We could even suggest that he
ties it into an article on the A2A project as one of the largest on line
Access projects currently being run.
Well a few thoughts from my lunch hour and on a final note on clothing when
will we all learn that it is the inner self not the outward appearance that
counts.
