I must say we would welcome any of our production staff who would like to
visit
the BBC archives!!!
One of our aims at the moment is to get more archives staff (like myself)
out of the "dim-lit dive" (see R. Taylor's message)and working in the
production environment to
manage the information/documents/assets/records/whatever you call them much
earlier
on in their lifecycle. This really does help to dispel the dusty musty
image!
However I have had certain producers (not naming any names) comment on my
"librarian-style"
glasses and cardigans..... time for a wardrobe change perhaps?
regards,
Alison

Peter Kurilecz's response seconded. Get back to them - journalists always
love someone who will feed them a story, rather than just complaining.
And Richard S - you may live to regret revealing that you have a close
contact in Radio 4... That said, in the two pieces I have done for Radio 4
I have found both the presenters and the producers interested and willing
to be informed about archives.
However, work for television is another matter - many independent
production companies in particular are the spawn of the devil and need to
be handled at arms-length with no concessions made. Tip - you can always
tell them when they ring up, because they nearly always say that they are
"making a programme for Channel 4", implying that they actually *are* C4.
In some cases Channel 4 may never have heard of them...
Stereotypically yours
The cellar monster
