Further to other replies there are some very good websites relating to the
preservation of modern media. I think the best one to help with Suzy's
request is the site belonging to the 'National Technology Alliance',
http://www.nta.org. In the 'Bibliography' section are two articles entitled
'Data Storage Technology Assessment 2000, Parts 1 (123 pages) & 2 (78
pages)', produced by the 'National Media Laboratory'. Much of the
information is of a technical nature, but it is well worth a look through.
At the end of Part II is a table 'Magnetic and Optical Disk Media Life
Expectancy Projections (In Years)', which gives the projected lifespan for
different media.
Other sites worth a look are those of the 'Council on Library & Information
Resources' - http://wwwclir.org/, the 'Digital Library Federation' -
http://www.diglib.org, and http:/rlg.org/preserv/diginews.

Subject: DIGITAL PRESERVATION ON CD
Could anyone tell me how long I can expect a CD full of files to be
accessible if it is never accessed (except for periodic audits).
Essentially I am establishing an archiving policy and I want to advise that
we re-copy our master every X years.
Can anyone help me with a figure to replace the X?
Would be very grateful for any recommendation.
Regards
