Seconded.
That said, given the existing list of speakers we would be likely to get a
speaker from the Public Record Office presenting the English perspective.
Why it is automatically assumed that the views of the civil service
archive, based in one corner of London, represent "the national
perspective" in a world of regions?
I would also second Nigel's comments on the Society use of this listserv.
I hereby regard myself as absolved from any restriction on postings to
archives-nra about the SoA Strategic Review. If the listserv is for the
discussion of professional issues, why is discussion on the future of our
professional society excluded?
I not too sure why, in principle, I should pay any attention to a gagging
order issued by a citizen of a foreign country which is unaffected by the
current changes to the world in which we work in Britain.
This is not a personal attack on Aideen. I am currently a member of the
Society of American Archivists, because I am interested in both the common
traditions and cultural differences in the management of archives that
exist between the British profession and the profession in a former colony
which has inherited many of our legal and constitutional traditions but
added a lot of its own. However, I regard myself as disqualified from
participating in any discussions on governance issues because I do not live
or work in the country which is affected.
Incidentally, the US archivists listserv tolerates a wide diversity of
disussion, including humerous and "off-topic" postings, on the grounds that
it is a community and that conversations within any community will
naturally range from the philosophical to the flippant - just like the
range of conversations you would find at any professional gathering. It
relies on the self-regulation of its subscribing members to keep things
within bounds, and is all the better for it.
