Dear All,
I am very appreciative of the great response to my appeal below. Some
absolute gems identified, many of which I hope we will use. We also had some
very helpful suggestions from constituents of the South East Museums Agency,
cross domain working at its best!
Unfortunately, there were so many that we will not be able to use them all,
and those selected will be on the basis of the value they add in
illustrating the specific topics to which they relate. There is by no means
any suggestion that those not selected are in any inferior
I will liaise with individual offices regarding publishing rights etc.
Winner of the bubbly is the Essex Record Office, with a fine example dating
from Jan 1846. There was another from the same year, but sadly a few months
later!
If anyone has any further examples of early or significant telegrams, please
let me know. Still not too late to include others if thought particularly
useful.
Thanks again to everyone who replied
David Hay
