The students following the MA programmes in archives and records management
at UCL generally undertake a group records project during the final
fortnight of the summer term (this year 20-31 May 2002). In this project,
the students have carried out records management surveys, backlog sorting
and appraisal, and descriptive work, in association with an established
records management or archive service. Generally the organisations hosting
these projects have been London-based: in recent years they have included
the Parliamentary Archives, UCL Records Office, the LSE, and the University
of London central administration and Archives.
This is a valuable opportunity for the students to apply their professional
skills in a real work context and to develop their teamworking, time
management and presentational skills. The host organisation benefits from
an input of expertise by a large group of almost-qualified records
professionals over a short period, to achieve a project which might not
otherwise be resourced. At the end of the project the group writes a report
and makes recommendations on future developments.
I am currently organising the 2002 project. If you think that you might be
interested in hosting such a project, either this summer or in a subsequent
year, please get in touch with me soon to discuss the possibilities.
