Names which occur to me include systat, stata, nsdstat, bmdp, p-stat,
statgraphics, NDS, unistat, glim. Then there's the statistical capabilities
of Excel and the like.
It's hard to draw the dividing line between clearly general purpose
packages, and apps which from the point of view of the enthusiast are the
only (albeit specialized) approach to take. Glim is an example of this,
but what about ML and 1st bayes?
Another point that occurs to me is that for most social survey analysts
there is little problem in finding adequate statistics software as such:
the difficulty is in data management. I have a subliminal recollection of a
'competition' many years ago in which rival publishers were set a DM task to
solve. That's all I remember, but some list members are even older than me.
