Cancer Research UK
Medical Statistics Group, Oxford
The Cancer Research UK Medical Statistics Group is part of the Centre for
Statistics in Medicine (director Doug Altman) at the Institute of Health
Sciences in Headington, Oxford. Including these posts, there will be 14
statisticians in the Centre, which is attached to the Nuffield Department
of Clinical Medicine, University of Oxford.
Post 1
We have a vacancy for a medical statistician to work on a funded project:
'Constructing prognostic models in the presence of missing covariate data'.
Missing data is a potential threat to the validity of prognostic models.
The programme of research will investigate the extent of biases associated
with different mechanisms of missing data and the relative performance of
complete case analysis and imputation methods when applied to these
incomplete data sets. The research will be based on several real data sets
in cancer. This project could be used to form the basis of a DPhil thesis.
Applicants should have a post-graduate qualification in statistics with
experience working in a medical area. Previous methodological work and
experience in prognostic modelling and statistical programming are desirable.
Salary will be in the range £18,512 - £33,333 per annum according to
experience. This is a three year fixed term appointment.
Post 2
We have a vacancy for a medical statistician to work on a new programme of
methodological work related to the diagnosis of cancer. The main project

procedures relating to cancer in both primary and secondary care. A
separate project will investigate the relation between methodological
aspects of studies evaluating diagnostic tests for cancer and diagnostic
performance.
In addition, the postholder will contribute to other methodological
research relating studies of cancer, and provide statistical support to
scientists in other Cancer Research UK units.
Applicants should have a post-graduate qualification in statistics or some
other degree including a quantitative component, and some experience
working in the medical area. Previous methodological work or experience of
systematic reviewing is desirable.
