Applications are invited for membership
of
The Northern & Yorkshire Multi-Centre
Research Ethics Committee
MRECs were established by the Department of
Health in 1997 to carry out the ethical review of
research undertaken on NHS patients in five or
more centres. There are currently eight committees
(although 2 new London MRECs are due to come
on stream in the summer of this year) based in each
of the NHS English Regions and comprising up to
18 members drawn from the general public and
from professions linked to health and social
sciences.
The Northern & Yorkshire MREC meets monthly
for between four and eight hours dependent on the
business. Members are expected to give adequate
time for preparation and personal development. No
remuneration is paid but expenses are covered.
Vacancies occur as members leave the Committee
for a variety of reasons and the Department wishes
to maintain a pool of people from which new
members can be drawn. However the Committee is
particularly keen to find another Statistician .
Knowledge of the NHS and awareness of issues
relating to local health research will be desirable.
Membership of a Local Research Ethics Committee
(LREC) will be an advantage but is not essential.
