MULTIVARIATE TECHNIQUES IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
(fourth of a series of part-expository meetings around the theme of
Environmental Impact Assessment)
IAN JOLLIFFE (University of Aberdeen)
Multivariate Methods and Atmospheric Science: The Sky's the Limit?
Many multivariate methods have been used, and indeed developed, in atmospheric science. This review restricts itself to mainly descriptive techniques, often based on eigen-analyses. Even so, the number of methods covered will be limited only by the time
available.
PETER CHALLENOR (Southampton Oceanography Centre)
Multivariate analysis of the North Atlantic Ocean - the problem of missing values
We investigate the variability of climate over the North Atlantic using principal component analysis and its variants. One of our data sets contains a large number of missing values. We describe methods for dealing with this problem, in particular probabilistic principal components.
ALAIN ZUUR (Marine Laboratory, Aberdeen)
Dimension reduction techniques for multivariate time series
In this talk dynamic factor analysis is discussed. This technique can be used to estimate common trends and effects of explanatory variables in short, non-stationary multiple time series. Fisheries and oceanographical applications are presented.
