UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE
Department of Public Health and Primary Care
CENTRE FOR APPLIED MEDICAL STATISTICS
***Two Medical Statisticians***
Applications are invited for a Research Assistantship and a Research
Associateship in the Centre for Applied Medical Statistics (CAMS) within the
University of Cambridge’s Department of Public Health and Primary Care.
These posts are NHS-funded to provide statistical support to a broad range
of clinical researchers within the University Clinical School and more
widely throughout (what has been) the NHS Eastern Region. We seek
individuals able to work in a multi-disciplinary team and having excellent
communication skills to explain clearly statistical concepts to clinicians.
Applicants should have a higher degree in (preferably, medical or applied)
statistics and, at least for the level of Research Associateship, some
experience in consulting, collaborating and teaching, and preferably a
relevant PhD. The main duties are to act as statistical consultant and
collaborator to a wide range of University and NHS clinical researchers
working in and around Cambridge, meaning there is an attractive variety of
people, projects, disease areas and data sets to be encountered. Either
post will involve developing or participating in short course teaching on
statistical issues to audiences from health-related backgrounds. Both posts
offer excellent opportunities for personal development, including applied
methodological research, perhaps jointly with MRC Biostatistics Unit
statisticians, also housed in the Institute of Public Health, located
adjacent to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Other activities within CAMS
include occasional statistical reviewing of papers submitted to The Lancet,
as well as for specialist biomedical journals.
CAMS was established in 1996 in response to the increasingly recognised need
for high quality statistics within medical research. CAMS comprises a
Director (Dr Chris Palmer) and, including these appointments, two other
full-time statisticians, two part-time statisticians, two PhD students and a
Course Co-ordinator. Further information can be found at our website:
http://www.medinfo.cam.ac.uk/com_med/cams.
Appointment is at the level of either Research Assistant or Research
Associate, depending on qualifications and experience. Either post is
available to begin as soon as possible with exact starting date to be
negotiated. Those currently completing graduate courses are also invited to
apply as we are prepared to wait for the right candidates.
Salary: £17,626 – 19,681 pa for Research Assistant; £17,626 – 26,491 pa for
Research Associate.
Limit of tenure: 31 March 2004
Note that funds are available until 31 March 2004 in the first instance and
the posts may, subject to the availability of funding, be renewed for a
further period or periods.
