Local Group Meeting for May 2002
Monday 13th May 2002
Ludi Simpson (Bradford Council and University of Manchester)
Why measure ethnic group? Statistics and social cohesion
Anti-discrimination, immigration, and multicultural policies compete in
a confusing set of 'ethnic group' categories used in the UK Census and
national surveys. Government regeneration policy demands more ethnic
group statistics, but when are racialised statistics are better than
nothing for black and asian communities (and when worse than nothing)?
Following the riots last summer in northern cities, the Cantle and
Denham reports from the Home Office have given status to legends about
race, population and social polarisation. Does the evidence for
Bradford support them?
Please note that the Group's AGM will also be held at this meeting. If
you would like to be involved with the organisation of the local group
then please contact the group's Secretary at the address below.
The meeting will be in LT11 of the Roger Stevens Building at the
University of Leeds starting at 4:00pm, with refreshments from 3:30pm
on Level 9 in the School of Mathematics.
