There are various possibilities for studentships at the Department of
Statistics at the University of Oxford. In particular please be alerted
to the following opportunity in our very strong group in mathematical
genetics and bioinformatics
WELLCOME TRUST PRIZE STUDENTSHIPS
The Wellcome Trust is keen to support collaborative DPhil projects for
maths and physical sciences graduates to work in biological applications,
in asociation with Wellcome Trust Fellows. Prize Studentships are
highly compteitive and well-funded (including a stipend well above that
from other grant-giving bodies), and would be jointly supervised by a
current Wellcome Trust fellow, and a second supervisor from the
mathematical or statistical sciences.
The are several opportunities for such collaborative projects in the Peter
Medawar Building for Pathogen Research. Wellcome Trust Senior Research
Fellows (and their research interests) within the building are
Gloria Rudenko: Molecular diversity of trypanosome parasites
Paul Klenerman: Epidemiology of Hepatitis
Andy Sewell: Dynamics of the human immune-system
Students could be co-supervised by faculty from the Statistics Department
(including the Bioinformatics group based at the Medawar Building). There
are many exciting questions and challenging mathematical and statistical
problems to address in this field. If you are interested to discuss
the opportunities further, please contact any of the above fellows
directly, members of the Bioinformatics and Mathematical Genetics Group,
or other members of the Department. Applicants for Prize studentships have
to be nominated by potential supervisors, and the deadline for
applications is March 31st.
