DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN
EPSRC PhD STUDENTSHIPS.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences has two EPSRC
(http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/) studentships available for PhD study in
Statistics. The component of maintenance allowance of these studentships
may be enhanced up to the level of £10,000 for 2002/3 for suitably
qualified applicants. A student's income can often be further increased, if
this is desired, by doing two or three hours of teaching a week in the
department during term. It should be noted that eligibility for the
studentships is restricted to candidates who are "normally" resident in the
UK and that candidates who are "ordinarily" resident in other EU countries
may be eligible to have their tuition fees paid but will need to find
separate funding for their living costs.
The research interests of the Statistics group within the department are
mainly of applied in character with current PhD students working in
collaboration with the Departments of Child Health and Zoology, and with
statisticians based at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and the
Rowett Research Institute. Research topics are available in Multivariate
Analysis, Statistical Genetics, Computational Statistics, Time Series
Analysis and Statistical Climatology. The group was awarded a Grade 4A in
the 2001 RAE exercise. Further information is available from Professor Ian
Jolliffe ([log in to unmask]).
Other areas of research activity in the department are Pure Mathematics,
Relativity Theory and Computer Vision.
Aberdeen is an attractive city of some 200,000 people on the north
east coast of Scotland close to spectacular scenery. The University is one
of the oldest in Britain, dating back to 1495. It has excellent facilities
and a pleasant campus area.
The procedure to follow for electronic submission of an application can be
found at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/sras/. Alternatively, hard copy application
forms can be obtained from, Prof G.S.Hall, Department of Mathematical
Sciences, Meston Building, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen AB24 3UE.
Applicants are encouraged to apply by April 15th, 2002.
