PROGRAMME LEADER (SENIOR SCIENTIST/STATISTICIAN)
Applications are invited for the above position based within the Cancer
Division of the MRC Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), London. The main focus of
the research of the Cancer Division is to conduct large, clinically
worthwhile, scientifically informative, phase III randomised trials in the
treatment of cancer with the aim of informing and improving clinical
practice. Translational research in collaboration with basic scientists is
likely to become increasingly important.
You will lead multi-disciplinary CTU teams responsible for the design,
conduct and analysis of a programme of multi-centre clinical trials and
related research in one or more cancer types and will work in close
collaboration with clinicians and other clinical trials groups in the UK and
internationally in the strategic planning of future research. You will also
be expected to play an active role in National Cancer Research Institute
Clinical Studies groups who are responsible for identifying new trials, and
advise on the design of such trials. In addition you will present and
discuss results of trials and their implications at national and
international conferences, and will need to liase and communicate
constructively with a number of organisations including the pharmaceutical
industry, cancer charities, patient advocacy groups, the media and the
public.
You should have experience in the design and conduct of clinical trials and
epidemiological studies, preferably in oncology and will be either medically
qualified with epidemiological training and experience or a statistician
with considerable practical experience in clinical trials or epidemiology.
Available from 1 May 2002 this post will be either a tenured position or
offered as a six-year appointment, depending on qualifications and
experience. Salary will be negotiable for excellent candidates and the
starting salary will be no lower than £33,500 pa, inclusive of Location
Allowance and Central London supplement. The benefits include 32.5 days
holiday per year, flexitime and an excellent pension scheme.
