Applied biostatistician (full-time).
The HIV Monitoring Foundation, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The HIV Monitoring Foundation was established in June 2001 with the aim of
contributing to the knowledge of the epidemiology and course of the treated,
as well as untreated infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The
Foundation began on the 1st of March 2002 and is responsible through the
Dutch Minister of Health for the monitoring of individuals with an HIV
infection. Through the Foundation, patient data on the course and treatment
of infection are collected anonymously and subsequently stored in a
national database, maintained by the Foundation. The main tasks of the
foundation in addition to the data collection are compiling and analysis of
the data for the Government, but also for AIDS treating physicians,
patients, researchers, press and the general public.
In addition to the board of governors and the director, the Foundation
encompasses an advisory board and three working groups ('Epidemiology and
Clinics', 'Virology' and 'HIV Surveillance'). There is a close collaboration
with the HIV Treatment Centres that are commissioned by the Minister of
Health and with the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment
(RIVM). The Foundation is domiciled in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, at the
Academic Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam. Analysis of data
obtained by the Foundation will be performed in close collaboration with the
Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology (head Professor Roy Anderson)
in the Faculty of Medicine of Imperial College, University of London.
The staff employed by the Foundation are organised into a number of small
groups, supporting the Foundation's activities: the patient's data and
materials group, the data compiling and analysis group, the secretariat and
financial and personnel management.
Within the data compiling and analysis group, headed by the director of the
Foundation is a vacancy for an
Applied bio-statistician (full-time). The main tasks of the post will be to
undertake the statistical analysis of the collated data on HIV-infected
patients, with the aim of better understanding the dynamics of HIV infection
at a population level. This will include analysing the effects of antiviral
drugs on the course of infection within patients and on the course of the
epidemic in the population, investigating changes in the transmissibility of
the virus and exploring the development and spread of antiretroviral
resistant HIV infection at a population level.
The post will be based at the Amsterdam Medical Centre in Amsterdam.
Additional supervision will be provided by the Department of Infectious
Disease Epidemiology, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine,
London, UK as part of an ongoing wider collaboration between clinical
researchers, mathematical modellers and statisticians in the two groups.
Both departments offer a stimulating, friendly environment and excellent
research facilities, including high-level computing facilities.
Applicants should possess a higher degree in statistics/epidemiology
(ideally at PhD level). Experience of epidemiological and HIV research would
be advantageous. Applicants should be able to work independently and good
communication skills are essential.
