PhD Research Studentship
A graduate studentship in Statistics, leading to the degree
of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), is available in the Centre
for Medical Statistics, Department of Mathematics, Keele
University of the UK. The project will investigate statistical
inference and diagnostics for longitudinal data arising in
particular in randomised controlled trials, based on joint
mean-covariance models. The student will receive training
in joint mean-covariance modelling, statistical diagnostics
and randomised controlled trials.
The studentship is funded by the EPSRC for three years,
and includes the standard EPSRC student stipend (£7,500-
£9,000) and the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Outstanding
applicants from outside the UK/EU, may be supported by means
of an ORS award, for which an additional application process
is required, there being no guarantee of success. (The ORS
scheme covers the difference between the tuition fee for a home
(UK) postgraduate student and that chargeable to an international
postgraduate student).
Applicants should have a good degree in Statistics or Medical Statistics
with a substantial mathematical statistical content. Strong computing
skills in Fortran and/or Splus and an interest in medical statistics in
particular in randomised controlled trials would also be advantageous.
Full project and job descriptions are available at:

The student will be supervised by Dr J. Pan and Prof. G. MacKenzie
at the Centre for Medical Statistics, Department of Mathematics,
Keele University, starting from September/October 2002. Applicants
should send a letter of application along with a full CV and the names
and contact details of at least two referees to: Dr. Jianxin Pan or
Prof. G. MacKenzie, The Centre for Medical Statistics, Department
of Mathematics, Keele University, Staffordshire, ST5 5BG, United
