Senior-Lectureship/Lectureship in Actuarial Mathematics
Applications are invited from persons with an established research
record or an interest in pursuing research in any
branch of actuarial science for a permanent appointment in the Department
of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics at Heriot-Watt University,
Edinburgh. It is intended that the person appointed will reinforce
the Department's established research strengths and contribute to the
Department's teaching activities in actuarial science.
Applications are welcome from persons who do not yet have a PhD or an
appropriate professional qualification. In either case the
appointee will be given encouragement and support to achieve
these qualifications.
The Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics is internationally
renowned for the high quality of both its research and its teaching in
Actuarial Science, Financial Mathematics and in Applied Probability. This
was acknowledged in 2001 with the award of the very high rating of 5
out of 5* for its research in the recent official ratings of research
announced by the UK's higher-education funding councils. This identifies
us as the leading centre for research in actuarial mathematics in
the United Kingdom.
Current teaching in the Department includes:
Undergraduate courses for the Honours degrees in Actuarial Mathematics &
Statistics, Financial Mathematics, and Statistics;
Postgraduate courses for the MSc in Actuarial Science;
Postgraduate courses for the MSc in Financial Mathematics;
Part-time courses for actuarial trainees from local companies.
Current research interests include the following:
Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics:
The impact of genetic testing on insurance, risk theory, stochastic
investment models, models for the term structure of interest rates,
derivative pricing, stochastic models in insurance and pensions, income
protection insurance, and mortality studies.
Statistics and Probability:
Epidemic modelling, stochastic networks, probability and algorithms,
stochastic differential equations, environmental statistics, design
of experiments.
It will be permissible for the persons appointed to undertake a certain
amount of private consultancy work.
