The CTSU is one of the world’s leading centres for research into the causes,
prevention, and treatment of chronic diseases (such as cancer and heart disease)
that are major causes of death. We are expanding the Heart Studies Group, which
runs several large studies in heart disease/other vascular disease, and seek to
recruit two people to work particularly on the ISIS case-control study, a very
large study including over 15,000 heart attack cases and incorporating blood
sample assays and genotyping.
PROGRAMMER (Statistical) – Ref: 02/016/SP
Academic-Related Research Staff Grade 1A: Salary £18,265 - £29,621
The appointee’s main role will be to conduct statistical analyses in SAS and
take initiative in developing a well-structured suite of SAS macros, working
with the senior statistician and scientists for scientific/statistical direction
and with two other programmer/statisticians from a programming perspective. An
understanding of common statistical procedures is expected, while the post offers
scope to acquire and utilise further statistical knowledge. The post also entails
maintaining the integrity of the database and some programming using other
software such as Ingres, Fortran, C/C++.
Applicants should have a good degree (or equivalent) in a scientific or numerate
subject and have several years experience of statistical analysis programming on
large data sets using SAS or a similar statistical package, demonstrating a
well-structured approach to large programming tasks.

MEDICAL STATISTICIAN/PROGRAMMER – Ref: 02/017/SP
Academic-Related Research Staff Grade 1A: Salary £18,265 - £29,621
The appointee will gain an understanding of all the studies within the group: to
pursue lines of investigation on the ISIS case-control study, planning,
programming and interpreting statistical analyses; to participate in the
statistical analysis of the randomised trials; and to provide statistical
support to other members of the group.
Applicants should have a good higher degree (or equivalent) in statistics or
closely related field, together with several years experience of statistical
analysis of large data sets using SAS or a similar statistical package and some
programming experience in a high-level language.
Successful applicants for both posts will have attention to detail and the
ability to work both as part of a team and unsupervised, together with the
ability to acquire new skills and responsibilities.
The appointments will be for 3 years in the first instance. Staff are eligible
