UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE
FORESIGHT CENTRE FOR PROCESS ANALYTICS AND CONTROL TECHNOLOGY
(CPACT)
PhD Studentships
Four PhD Studentships are available in the Foresight Centre for Process
Analytics and Control Technology (CPACT). CPACT is supported through
active collaborations with end-user chemical and pharmaceutical companies -
Avecia, Aventis, BP Chemicals, BNFL, GSK, 3M Healthcare alongside
analytical instrument vendor companies and advanced process control and
optimisation companies.
The research projects are directed towards addressing challenges in the
areas of multivariate statistical performance modelling for dynamic,
multi-component processes, the development of empirical models for process
scale-up and scale-down using Bayesian analysis, process state and
parameter estimation, optimisation and model-based control and advanced
signal processing. Industrial applications will be to chemical, biochemical
and fermentation processes.
The successful candidates will join an RAE Grade 5 research department with
an internationally acknowledged multi-disciplinary research team comprising
6 Postdoctoral research associates and 14 PhD students.
Candidates for the PhD Studentships should have, or expect to attain, a
first or upper second BSc, MSc or MEng degree, or equivalent, in a relevant
discipline including chemical and biochemical engineering, physics, applied
mathematics and statistics. They should be able to demonstrate good
communication skills and be willing to work for periods at company sites in
the UK and in continental Europe.
Successful candidates will have University Fees paid and a tax free
maintenance stipend of up to £10,500 per year, reflecting the industrial
collaborative nature of their research programme.
