RSS ORDINARY MEETING
Wednesday 13 November 2002, 5.00pm at the RSS (Tea 4.30pm)
Inferences from DNA data: population histories, evolutionary processes and
forensic match probabilities
Ian J Wilson, Michael E Weale and David J Balding
Summary
We develop Metropolis-Hastings algorithms for drawing Bayesian
inferences about human history, mutation processes, and forensic match
probabilities from genetic samples. Even though neither recombination
nor selection is included, our models are very complex; to capture the
correlation structure of the data, they include the entire underlying
genealogical tree. Challenges include finding acceptable compromises
between tractability and the reality of human history, checking
algorithm validity, and monitoring convergence. We illustrate these
challenges using Y-chromosome, mitochondrial, and beta-globin
datasets.
