Centre for Medical Statistics
Keele University
Temporary Position (Term: 1 year)
R/A Statistical Modelling - Survival Analysis
The Centre for Medical Statistics is seeking a statistical modeller to
provide technical support for its Cancer Modelling research effort
being conducted in collaboration with the North Staffordshire (NS) LHA
and the Newcastle-under-Lyme Primary Care Group.
Breast Cancer survival rates in NS are poor. Published NHS performance
indicators indicate that NS came bottom of the national
Health Authority league in terms of unadjusted 5-year relative survival
rates for patients diagnosed between 1991-1993.
The object of the present study is to investigate the reasons underlying
these poor survival rates. The Centre has obtained a
comprehensive breast cancer survival data-set from the West Midlands
Cancer Intelligence Unit which will be the subject of
detailed analysis.
The statistical modeller will be responsible for implementing standard
PH frailty survival models and analysing the study data using SPSS
and SPLUS. He/she will also develop new non-PH frailty and other models
under the supervison of the Director, Professor G.
MacKenzie.
The person appointed will have a good degree in Mathematical Statistics,
a keen interest in survival analysis and preferably an
MSc in Statistics or Medical Statistics. He/she will be a self-starter,
have good communication skills and be capable of working
independently when required.
The position is available for one year in the first instance, but
consideration will be given to the retention of a talented R/A. The
appointment will be made on the first point of the Research Assistant
(Grade 1A) scale - £17,626 pa.
Further particulars may be obtained from The Personnel Office, Keele
University, Keele, Staffordshire ST5 5BG. Potential candidates may
wish to discuss the post informally with Professor Gilbert MacKenzie,
Director, Centre for Medical Statistics: (01782) 583269,
