The Clinical Effectiveness Unit is a collaboration between The
Royal College of Surgeons of England and The London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Its remit is to carry out national
audits, develop audit methodologies, and produce evidence on
clinical and cost effectiveness of surgical procedures.
The CEU and the British Association Otorhinolaryngologists - Head
and Neck Surgeons are carrying out a national prospective audit of
complications after tonsillectomy. This project is funded by the
Department of Health. The audit's aim is to investigate risk factors
for haemorrhage and other complications after tonsillectomy.
For this audit, we are seeking a Statistician - Data Manager, who will
be part of multidisciplinary team (ENT surgeons, epidemiologists,
statisticians and IT experts). The candidate will be responsible for
maintaining the databases, supporting data validation procedures,
designing and carrying out statistical analyses, and writing statistical
reports. There will also be the opportunity to participate in other
large-scale research projects of the CEU with an emphasis on risk
modelling for case-mix adjustment.
Candidates should have a postgraduate degree in (medical) statistics
or a related discipline. Programming experience, good
communication and organisational skills, and enthusiasm for research
are essential. Experience with handling large databases, risk
modelling and analysis of multilevel data would be advantageous.
