Dear all,
If anybody knows of a person who might be interested in the following
studentship application then I would be grateful if they could bring
this to their attention.
Best,
Guy
Wellcome Trust Prize Studentship in Bioinformatics
Professors Guy A. Rutter (Biochemistry) and Guy Nason (Mathematics)
As part of its Functional Genomics Development Initiative, the Wellcome
Trust may be willing to sponsor a Prize Studentship, provided that the
student will be working in the area of bioinformatics or mathematical
biology and has a background in computing, mathematics or the physical
sciences.
The proposed project, which will be co-supervised in the departments of
Mathematics and Biochemistry, will involve: (a) statistical analyses of
changes in gene expression in insulin-secreting pancreatic islet cells,
as revealed using novel approaches including cDNA microarrays.
Simulations of the impacts of the changes, for example on cell signaling
networks or metabolism, will then be designed; (b) the design of new
artificial-intelligence based approaches to analyzing secreting vesicle
movement in living cells by confocal or other microscopy techniques.
If awarded, the stipend would start in the region #13 - #14 K pa, with
full research support plus traveling expenses.
Interested students, who have graduated, or expect to graduate with a
First or Upper Second class degree in Mathematics or a Physical Science
by Summer 2003, should contact Prof. Rutter on Int 46401
([log in to unmask]) or Prof Nason on Int. 8633
([log in to unmask]) by Friday October 25 th 2002 at the latest.
