The construction and implementation of Clinical Trials via the Internet.
Position: PhD Scholarship
Department: Monash Institute of Health Services Research, Monash University
Clinical trials of health care interventions that involve the randomisation
of participants to either treatment or control groups have been undertaken
on a regular basis since 1958. They represent the major scientific method
for examining the effects (or relative effects) of different treatments
(including service systems and population level interventions). There have
also been numerous calls to ‘change the culture’ within health care systems
so that evaluative research (including clinical trials) becomes seen as part
of the norm, rather than an academic research exercise. Although clinical
trials have grown in popularity as a research method, there remain many
important clinical questions for which trials have not been undertaken. The
availability of the Internet provides a potential medium to facilitate more
efficient management of such trials, possibly resulting in greater
opportunities for involvement of more practitioners and patients,
particularly those isolated from large tertiary centres.
The successful candidate will construct, develop and contribute to
appropriate aspects of the project in conjunction with team members.
Primarily, the candidate will contribute to the project by conducting
independent research and software development related to medical practice,
computerised trials, and continuous monitoring of health outcomes. In
particular, it will allow for the candidate to establish a professional role
at the cutting edge of distributed databases, web technology and e.health
applications.
The successful candidate will have qualifications in statistics,
epidemiology, biostatistics or computer programming. The position will be
for three years starting September 2002. The scholarship is an APAI (ARC)
and the award is $23406 pa. The scholarships will be allocated on a
competitive basis.
Please send a curriculum vitae, transcripts, a sample publication or
work-in-progress, names and contact details for 3 referees and a letter of
