Biostatistician
---------------
MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge
The MRC Biostatistics Unit, which aims to advance medical science by the
development and application of statistical methodology, has a high UK and
international profile. The Unit seeks a biostatistician to research at the
interface between public health and the criminal justice system.
The appointee will work principally with Dr Sheila Bird on a biostatistical
initiative on injection drug use, recidivism and infectious diseases; and with
the Unit's Hepatitis C co-workers.
Statistical methods for transmissible chronic diseases are applicable to the
study of injection drug use and its associated acquisitive crime. We will
develop novel designs which measure injector incidence and injector-related
Hepatitis C incidence, exploit database linkage, or invoke randomisation in the
criminal justice system. The biostatistical initiative will enhance
quantitative understanding of the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of criminal
justice interventions for drug-dependent offenders, the broad aims of which are
to reduce recidivism, morbidity and mortality.
The biostatistician appointment is for 3 years in the first instance.
Applicants should have (or be submitting) a PhD, or have an MSc with some years
of experience of research in statistics, as well as good communication skills
and the ability to work in a team. The appointment will be in MRC band 4, with
initial salary likely to be in the range £20,320 to £24,384.
