Hi,
I'll put in my 2cents worth.
We are a linux shop. Our latest are dell workstation 530. Dual 1.7Ghz
xeon processors with 17 flat panel screen with 2gig ram. They have
3x73gig drives, a cd-rom, a zip drive and a scsi based cd-rw. Also one
has a dlt-8000 attached for backup. These are our newest acquistion. I
am rather happy with the overall config. In general I manage about 10
linux boxes (most are dell 620 workstations dual 1ghz pIII from last
year). They are stable and have performed well. I have recently
upgraded them all to rh7.2 which is really nice and stable. Software
management on linux is rather simple if you are using rpm. We run pretty
tight security on these, tcp wrappers and ipchains. However we do cross
mount with nfs but on a private switch.
The other fmri labs here at the university are pretty much dominated by
linux, though we do have a smattering of sun machines. But again, the
linux seem to be really stable and inexpensive and relatively easy to
manage.

Hi,
I am planning to purchase a computer and software (Matlab) for SPM99.
I
wonder which hardware (unix based workstation vs. windows based pc)
will be
a better choice. I am going to use this mainly for fMRI. Thanks in
advance.
