so does this mean that if women dont take HRT they will suffer from lack
of
vigour, an inactive brain, no bottle and no zest for
life?

Subject: HRT study
I wonder whether anybody has any thoughts about today's coverage of the
study into the risks associated with the use of Prempro, a type of
hormone
replacement therapy. Let us use 'The Times' as an example. The front
page
headline is:
HRT is linked to breast cancer: US study is halted after health fears
rise;
Patients suffer 41% increase in stroke risk; 22% increase in risk of
heart
disease
***
>From a quick survey, most of the papers have taken a similar approach
and
the headline figures above are what seem to stand out - particularly if
you
only read the first 3-5 paragraphs. All a bit reminiscent of the 1995
Pill
Panic re deep vein thrombosis.
The Sun and the Mirror both splash alarming headlines on their front
pages.
HOWEVER, apart from the 'inevitable' headline, I think the Mirror
otherwise
does a very good job. About 100 words in on the front page it states
'But
British experts said the tested dose was not available in the UK and
stressed that the increased risk was extremely ... TURN TO PAGE 6' and
on
page 6 'small'.
Moreover, page 6 is primarily devoted to an exceptionally good column by
Miriam Stoppard headlined 'Dr Miriam Stoppard on HRT's Benefits' and in
very
large print in the middle of the page 'I personally can live with the
risks,
in exchange for vigour, an active brain, plenty of bottle and a zest for
life' - a great message in my opinion.
The column begins 'Good science comes from considered analysis, not the
spread of alarm and panic' and early on explains, more clearly I think
than
in any broadsheet I read, the context of the increased risk - that for
every
woman the risk of getting breast cancer is 1.0 per 1,000 women over 10
years
so that a 26 per cent increase in the risk takes the figure to 1.26 per
1,000 over the same period 'which by any accounting is not a huge jump.
This
is the way such statistics should be stated objectively to women who
have
been frightened by this report'.
So for me congratulations go to Miriam Stoppard - I have to admit I
haven't
read her column before (and only occasionally read the Mirror), but I
think
I might take a look more often to see what other sense she is talking. I
certai9nly recommend reading this one.
