The following is the full text of the statement being issued by the Royal
Society, Royal Institution and the British Association for the Advancement
of Science in response to media enquiries about COPUS:
19 June 2002
JOINT MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION, ROYAL INSTITUTION AND
ROYAL SOCIETY:
Next steps for Copus
Copus' three founding partners (The British Association, The Royal
Institution and The Royal Society) are pleased that Lord Jenkin of Roding
has kindly agreed to facilitate the Copus Council's continued efforts to
develop a new role for Copus, following the decision by the Copus chairman,
Dame Bridget Ogilvie, to resign at the end of June.
Following extensive consultation and review, the Copus Council continues to
consider how it can best develop Copus to underpin science communication in
the UK. During this time, the Royal Society has recruited two new members of
staff who have remodelled existing Copus activities to reflect today's
priorities for science communication and the founding partners are pleased
that, despite the problems which Copus has faced in agreeing a way forward,
its existing activities (including the awarding of over 90 grants for
science communication projects in the last year, administering the Aventis
Prizes for Science Books and, with the British Association, extensively
re-vamping Building Bridges into The Science Communication Conference) have
continued to thrive.
We share Dame Bridget's disappointment that more rapid progress was not made
in mapping out a new role for Copus. During the discussions at the recent
Council meeting stimulated by a draft business plan, an agreed way forward
for Copus was beginning to emerge. We are delighted that Lord Jenkin is
taking the initiative to move these discussions forward and look forward to
cooperating in the process.
The three founding partners would like to thank Dame Bridget for her hard
work as chairman and to thank the other members of Copus' Council for their
continued efforts to develop a new role for Copus, one that will ensure it
can effectively meet the challenges facing science communication today.

Anyone prepared to come in and provide more detail about what happened here
- and why?

Subject: Jenkins replaces "embarrased" Ogilivie
This news hasn't been broadcast on the list and, though many UK people will
be up-to-date on it, I thought it worth posting for those not so connected.
It is edited from last Friday's Times Higher:
Society accused of stalling funding: Caroline Davis
The Royal Society was recalled by MPs this week to explain events leading up
to the resignation of Bridget Ogilivie from the Committee on the Public
Understanding of Science... Dame Bridget resigned as chair of Copus in May,
accusing the Royal Society of holding back progress on increasing funding to
remodel the organisation...
In her resignation statement, Dame Bridget says: "I am highly embarrassed by
the total paralysis shown so clearly by the last two meetings of Copus
council. As things stand, it is pointless to continue."
In a joint statement this week, the founding partners announced that Lord
Jenkin of Roding would take over as Copus chair. It added: "We share Dame
Bridget's disappointment that more rapid progress was not made in mapping
out a new role for Copus."
