Well, there is the case that Scots split from English sometime between _The
Brus_ and _The Wallace_, so maybe after that we should talk of two
languages -- English and Scottish -- and within these, subvarieties
thereoff. [I +still+ can't bring myself to use the word, "dialect" <g>.]
But that's a bit nitpicky, so I'll go with what you say. With reservations
