Árni
My native Swedish is really very childish - when I do translations into
English I always need a dictionary and preferably someone else's
translation too.
I admire translators beyond anything. When Bloodaxe published their great
series of Scandinavian poets in translation (this was in the late 80s, just
before the optimism that alone could have permitted such a publishing
aberration began collapsing), the translators changed my life. I could make
contact again with a different culture - which was still somehow mine -
that I'd been blindly groping for. David MacDuff did the Swedish and
Herbert Read the Finnish - and Scandinavian poetry became my passion,
though it meant more to me than just poetry.
(There are, I think, no plans to publish David Macduff's translation of
Gösta Ågren's "Jär" trilogy - which is available in full on his site.)
So I too am very interested in the difficult names of your favourite poets!
(men isländsk grammatik är mycket för svårt för mig, tro jag...)
Hälsningar från Mikael
